The manners

Better manners than most guests.

Anything that listens has to earn its place at the table. MagnetMount never runs covertly: a chime at every start, a ring that tells the truth, and a veto anyone can use.

  • Dark means off

    Nothing is captured until someone presses. There is no wake word, ever.

  • Red means on the record

    A chime plays at every start, and the ring stays red for as long as it listens.

  • Anyone can go off the record

    Say “off the record” and it pauses, drops the last two minutes and cuts the microphone.

  • Anyone can say “forget that”

    The last two minutes disappear. Forget a whole night, or everything about one person.

In many places, recording a private conversation needs everyone's permission. MagnetMount is designed around asking first. Please ask.

Questions

Things people ask at dinner.

Is it listening all the time?

No. It captures only after a press. A chime plays every time, the ring stays red while it's on the record, and there is no wake word.

Is it legal to bring it to dinner?

Rules differ by place, and many require everyone's permission. Everyone hears the chime, anyone can say “off the record”, and the Manners explain how to ask gracefully. This isn't legal advice.

What happens to what it hears?

It keeps plans, not conversations. Audio is discarded once it's transcribed on your phone, transcripts stay on the phone for seven days, and anyone can say “forget that”.

Which phones does it work with?

It snaps to MagSafe iPhones and MagSafe cases, and to any MagSafe or Qi2 mount.

Do I have to pay every month?

No. The device is the membership: everything core is free for as long as you own it. Regulars is $39 a year for the extras.

Is it a dating thing?

No. There are no dating features, on purpose.
